HOOVER, Ala. – After one round of play, the Illinois State men’s golf team finds itself in 18th place at the Samford Intercollegiate. The Redbirds finished the round at the par-72, 7,001 yard Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala., with a team score of 325. Host school Samford led all teams after the opening round with a team score of 291. The second round was not completed on Monday as scheduled, hence the round will be resumed Tuesday morning.

Sophomore Wils Hawn led the Redbird effort, firing a six-over-par 78. He was followed by junior Ricky Hearden, who recorded a seven-over-par 79. Senior Eric Meier and freshman Jordan Fahel both posted a score of 84, while sophomore Parker Freiburg ended the round with a tally of 85.

Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis would like to see his squad show improvement on Tuesday.

“It was a tough day,” Kralis said. “The winds were gusty, and it made it tough to commit to shots. Yet at the same time, other teams handled it much better than we did. We have no choice but to take responsibility for today and make sure that we have the right mindset for tomorrow. We played better in the afternoon, but today was still far below what we expected. We dug a huge hole for ourselves, but we can’t dwell on it. How we come back from this tomorrow is important.”

Illinois State will look to move up in the field during tomorrow’s final round, following the conclusion of the second round.  Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
