Men's Golf Travels to Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
Feb. 14, 2014
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team will travel south again to compete in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, Feb. 17-18, at Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. The three-round intercollegiate will be played on Monday (36 holes) and Tuesday (18 holes) with an 8:30 a.m. (CST) shotgun start.
Head Coach Ray Kralis is excited to get back outdoors and compete, after a strong showing at the Tinervin Cup against top-10 ranked, Illinois.
"We're still a little bit in the preparation stage," Kralis said. "That being said, I'm going down there with a bunch of competitors, and we're going there to compete. We're going up against a tremendous field, a strong SEC presence, and from a competitive standpoint, you have to love that. Even though it's kind of a kick start and our first stroke-play event of the spring, I'm thrilled we're jumping right into something that is going to test us. I think it gives us an opportunity to learn about ourselves, and when you learn about yourself, you have opportunity to grow and that's what we're looking for."
Representing Illinois State in the USA Individual Tournament will be Josh Edison. The individual tournament is held at neighboring Magnolia Falls Golf Crossing, a 7,158 yard, par-71 course.
Along with host South Alabama and Illinois State, the 15-team field includes Akron, Auburn, Chattanooga, Davidson College, Florida State, Kentucky, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Mississippi, Samford, Southern Mississippi, Texas State and Wake Forest.
At the 2013 Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, Auburn took home the first-place title, while Illinois State took 15th place. The Redbirds hope to step up their game and start their first spring tournament off right.
