Men's Golf Finishes 14th at the Firestone Invitational

Oct. 9, 2012

AKRON, Ohio - The Illinois State men's golf team finished in a three-way tie for 14th at the Firestone Invitational Tuesday. The Redbirds carded a team score of 607 (300-307) to finish the 36-hole tournament.

Consistency amongst the team will be key as it heads into its fifth tournament of the season. The Redbirds look to put this tournament play behind them as they head south to the Lone Star Invitational.

"The outcome is disappointing knowing the potential this group has, but we can't hang our heads with UTSA (Texas-San Antonio) next week," said head coach Ray Kralis. "I saw some kinks in our armor that need to be corrected, but we had some guys that carried themselves well despite dealing with adversity, which is great to see. We need to be more consistent scoring as a group instead of passing the baton around, and that starts with consistency in our mental toughness and self management."

Junior Wils Hawn led the Redbirds with a two-round score of 145 (69-76), finishing tied for 12th. Junior Parker Freiburg carded a two-round score of 152 (77-75), one stroke better than freshman Tyler Gentilella, who tallied a final score of 153 (74-79).

Rounding out the lineup for the Redbirds was senior Ricky Hearden, who carded a two-round score 158 (81-77), one shot better than senior Matt Solis, who finished with a final score of 159 (80-79).

Ball State led the field with a team score of 569, followed by St. Mary's (582) and Davidson College (583), respectively.

ISU will be back on the course again Oct. 14th in San Antonio, Texas, to compete at the Lone Star Invitational. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
