Emerich Breaks Course Record With Opening Round 63, Leads Redbirds on Day One of D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate
Oct. 7, 2007
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team is in third place following a two-round-total 574 (282, 292) in day one action of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State. The Redbirds were led by redshirt sophomore Joe Emerich who broke the course record in the first round with his score of 63.
"Joe's first round was phenomenal," said head coach Ray Kralis. "I think most of our guys were excited to play at home and it was great to see Joe play so well and really help us early in the day."
The previous course record was held by former Redbird Matt Miller, who shot a 64 on July 1, 2005. Emerich finished the day with a two-round-total of 136 (63, 73) and currently leads Jordan Cox of Southern Illinois by one stroke.
Each of Illinois State's nine squad members competed as the Redbirds entered an extra team of four players and did not have any individual tournament entries. Redshirt sophomore Kyle Bragg, who is just five strokes behind teammate and tournament leader Emerich, recorded a two-round-total of 141 (72, 69) and is currently tied for fifth place.
One other Redbird finished the day in the top-15 as true freshman Will Cullen is currently tied for 11th following a two-round-total of 143 (70, 73).
"We had a lot of guys put together pretty solid rounds today," said Kralis. "To see a guy like Kyle Bragg play so well on a course that suits him and to really see our kids play well and get some of their confidence back will be a big factor in what we are able to do tomorrow."
Illinois leads the 54-hole event after recording a 565 (290, 275) as a team. In second place, Southern Illinois is just two spots ahead of Illinois State after a day-one-total of 572 (288, 284).
The Weibring Intercollegiate concludes Sunday, Oct. 8 as the final 18 holes will be played beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
