Men's Golf Finishes Third at Badger Invitational
Oct. 1, 2013
MADISON, Wis. -
With a personal best of 215 (71-74-70), Jordan Fahel tied for third place and led the Illinois State men's golf team to a third-place finish at the Badger Invitational. Even with windy conditions, Illinois State stepped up and finished with a team score of 883 (287-300-296), just three strokes behind second place Kansas in the 14-team field.
Head Coach Ray Kralis was pleased with the team's performance and ability to finish on a strong note.
"Strong and steady winds again made for a challenging day and clearly impacted the entire field," Kralis said. "Jordan and Kyle Meihofer finished strong with very impressive 70's to lead us, and to get two sub-par scores on a day like today was huge for our team total. The team total was the second best of the day and moved us up the leaderboard. We were just three shots back of second in a very solid field, which is a great way to finish heading into Firestone next week."
Kyle Meihofer fired off a 70 in the third round to finish tied for fifth place with a score of 216 (71-75-70), while Parker Freiburg finished tied for 33rd with a score of 226 (71-75-80). Wils Hawn carded a 228 (74-76-78) and Josh Edison finished with a score of 240 (81-81-78).
South Carolina took first place with a team score of 856 (282-283-856), while Kansas took second with a score of 880 (290-294-296). South Carolina golfers Caleb Sturgeon and Matthew NeSmith took first and second place, respectively, with scores of 206 (65-72-69) and 212 (72-67-73). Illinois State defeated Big Ten host Wisconsin, as well as Marquette and Northern Illinois.
The Redbirds hope to use the momentum, as they travel to the Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, Oct. 7-8.
