Men's Golf Finishes Day One in Third at Weibring Intercollegiate
Sept. 22, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team ended day one of competition at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate in third place with a team score of 600 (306-294) Saturday. The Redbirds fought with windy conditions and cool temperatures during the two rounds.
"Strong winds and cold temperatures made the quick greens even more challenging, and it was sometimes difficult to be decisive and commit to shots," head coach Ray Kralis explained. "Overall, I am pleased with how we competed on day one, under the tough conditions, and I like the direction we moved in during round two. Matt Solis stepped up for us with two great rounds, and I look for a strong team effort Sunday."
The Redbirds were led by Solis, who carded a two-round score of 144 (74-70), including a second-round, 1-under-par performance, finishing day one in third place. Following Solis was senior Ricky Hearden, who ended the day tied for 13th, tallying a two-round score of 150 (77-73), two strokes better than junior Parker Freiburg, who shot a day one score of 152 (78-74).
Competing as individuals were freshman Tyler Pope-Ferguson, who shot a two-round score of 160 (83-77), followed by sophomore Josh Edison with a two-round score of 163 (83-80), two strokes better than senior Matt Hageman, who ended day one with a 165 (82-83).
Illinois leads the field after day one with a team score of 578 (292-286), followed by Central Arkansas with a team tally of 596 (300-296) for second place.
The Redbirds will be back on the course Sunday for the final round of the 54-hole tournament. Play will begin at 8:45 a.m., with a shotgun start.
