Redbirds Headed to Kansas Invitational to Begin Season
Sept. 15, 2007
Normal, Ill. - The Redbird men's golf team will look to carry over momentum from last season as Illinois State begins its 2007-08 season competing in the Kansas Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 17-18th.
Illinois State, who finished the 2006-07 campaign with a strong showing in the NCAA Central Regional, return no seniors to a young but experienced squad.
Head Coach Ray Kralis is excited to see what his team is capable of early in the year.
"We have a deep team and qualifying was extremely competitive," said Kralis. All of the guys are pushing each other and that will really help us if we want to reach our potential."
Illinois State will be led by junior Ben Murphy, redshirt sophomore Joe Emerich and sophomore Drew Miller. Murphy and Miller each finished in the top-10 at last season's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Also competing for the Redbirds are redshirt sophomore Kyle Bragg and true freshman Will Cullen, who is making his collegiate debut.
"I feel great about the group of guys we are taking," said Kralis. "Our young guys have matured so much. We feel like we can have four or five guys putting up good numbers, and that is going to give us a chance every time we compete."
The Kansas Invitational is a 54-hole, 17-team event taking place at the Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The Redbirds will also be competing against fellow MVC members Drake, Missouri state, and Northern Iowa.
