Sept. 11, 2012
NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - Senior Ricky Hearden won first place as he led the Redbirds to a second place finish at the Fairway Club Invitational, with a three-round score of 219 (75-72-72) Tuesday. With fighting wind conditions, the Redbirds finished with a team score of 900 (297-307-296), one stroke shy of taking first place.
"This was a solid start for us as a team" head coach Ray Kralis said. "Even though we came up a shot short to host Nebraska in the team title race, we had the low round in both the first and more importantly, the last round. We have plenty of positives to build on following our 10-1 start."
Junior Wils Hawn also had a solid performance firing a 221 (72-77-72) finish, tying for fourth.
"I was also pleased with the both freshmen in their debut," Kralis said. "They will definitely have a positive impact on our squad right away."
Freshman Tyler Pope-Ferguson carded a three-round score of 231 (77-79-75), two strokes better than freshman Tyler Gentilella who shot a three-round score of 233 (73-83-77), wrapping up their first collegiate tournament debut.
Rounding out the Redbirds line-up was junior Parker Freiburg, who tied his best round of the tournament firing a three-round score of 243 (85-79-79).
Sophomore Josh Edison carded a three-round score of (82-80-81), completing his first tournament as a Redbird.
The host Nebraska took first place with a team score of 899 (306-292-301).
Illinois State will take the course again Sept. 17, competing at the Rams Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo.
