Men's Golf Ends Day One Tied for Fourth at the Fairway Club Invite
NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - The Illinois State men's golf team led the 12-team field at the Fairway Club Invitational after the first round, but ended the day tied for fourth place with a team score of 604 (297-307), due to windy conditions and fast greens Monday. While only being down six strokes, the Redbirds look to build momentum going into the final round.
"The golf course didn't give you much, you had to earn it," head coach Ray Kralissaid. "It was a day that continued to test our patience, and I was pleased with the mental toughness exhibited by our guys. They continued to battle, and I am confident in the group heading into tomorrow."
Freshmen Tyler Pope-Ferguson (77-79) and Tyler Gentilella (73-83) both shot a 156 and are tied for 34th place in their first collegiate tournament. The freshmen duo looks to gain momentum, as they head into the final round. Rounding out the lineup for the Redbirds was junior Parker Freiburg, who carded a two-round score of 164 (85-79).
Competing as an individual, sophomore Josh Edisonshot a score of 162 (82-80) in his first tournament with the Redbirds.
Leading the field is host Nebraska with a score of 598 (306-292) followed by South Dakota State (600) and Oral Roberts (603), respectively. Illinois State and Missouri Valley Conference foe Missouri State (304-300) are tied for fourth.
The Redbirds will take the course Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., to complete the final round of play.
