HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Illinois State men's golf team finished its season in fifth place at the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship Tuesday. The Redbirds finished with a score of 904 (299-301-304), while Wichita State won its fifth-consecutive title with a score of 877 (288-293-296) at the par-70, 6,598 yard Prairie Dunes Country Club.

Head men's golf coach Ray Kralis felt his team could have done better.

"It's a disappointing end to a disappointing season," Kralis said. "I had higher expectations for this Championship and the season as a whole, and it feels like we fell short of our potential. I know the guys gave their best, but while we improved through the year, we just didn't execute when it mattered most. We can learn much from this adversity, and I don't want to miss those lessons. Starting with me, we need to get better, and preparation for next season has already started."

Sophomore Wils Hawn ended the tournament in a tie for 10th after carding a 13-over-par 223 (71-76-76). He was followed up by junior Ricky Hearden, who added a 15-over-par 225 (74-74-77) to finish in a tie for 14th. Junior Matt Solis completed the tournament in 17th place, after recording an 18-over-par 228 (76-74-78). Finishing in a tie for 18th, sophomore Parker Freiburg posted a 19-over-par 229 (78-77-74). Senior Eric Meier wrapped up his Illinois State career in a tie for 35th, carding a 24-over-par 234 (78-79-77).

Wichita State's Hunter Sparks took home individual medalist honors after posting a seven-over-par 217 (72-72-73).  Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
