HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Illinois State men’s golf team finds itself in seventh place at the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship after two rounds Monday. The Redbirds posted a day one tally of 600 (299-301), while defending champion Wichita State leads the field with a team score of 581 (288-293) at the par-70, 6,598 yard Prairie Dunes Country Club.

Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis looks forward to seeing how his team will compete in the final round.

“Prairie Dunes Country Club tests you from start to finish, even when the playing conditions are favorable as they were today,” Kralis said. “We had good stretches of golf, but we let some shots get away which dropped us back in the pack. The guys battled all day and showed the mental toughness that will be needed tomorrow as the conditions make the course even more challenging. It is tightly bunched with only six shots separating second place from seventh, so we expect to make a move.”

Sophomore Wils Hawn led the Redbirds on day one, posting a seven-over-par 147 (71-76) to place himself in a tie for eighth. He is followed by junior Ricky Hearden, who is in a tie for 11th after recording an eight-over-par 148 (74-74). Junior Matt Solis is in a tie for 18th, after adding a 10-over-par 150 (76-74). Having carded a 15-over-par 155 (78-77), sophomore Parker Freiburg is currently tied for 31st. Senior Eric Meier ended day one in a tie for 39th after recording a 17-over-par 157 (78-79).

Illinois State will retake the course for the final round Tuesday, which will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.  Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
