Men's Golf Finishes Day One in Second at Valley Championship

April 29, 2013

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Illinois State men's golf team finished day one of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship sitting in second place, firing a team score of 593 (297-296) to complete two rounds of the tournament Monday with ideal weather conditions.

As the Redbirds enter the final 18 holes of the season, ISU must maintain composure, while continuing to have a strong team effort to finish out the tournament and sustain a top-place finish.

"Hats off to Wichita State for a stellar performance," head coach Ray Kralis said. "Although they created a lot of separation between themselves and the field, I know that our guys will continue to compete. I am very pleased on our performance, and I look forward to a strong team effort, as we enter into the final 18 holes of the season."

Seniors Ricky Hearden and Matt Solis both carded a two-round score of 149 (74-75) (73-76), respectively, to finish tied for seventh to end day one. Junior Wils Hawn tied for 10th, firing a two-round score of 150 (79-71), just one stroke better than junior Parker Freiburg, who tallied a day one score of 151 (77-74).

Rounding out the lineup for the Redbirds is freshman Tyler Gentilella, who fired a two-round score of 153 (73-80).

Wichita State led the nine-team field with a team score of 569 (288-281), followed by Illinois State (593) and Southern Illinois (600).

"We have emphasized controlling the things that we can control all season, and we'll need to do that Tuesday," Kralis said. "We have a big round in front of us and will need to stay focused on the process of scoring and not get caught up in the outcome."

Round three will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. to complete the tournament. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
