Redbirds Place Second in Battle at the Warren
April 23, 2012
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Illinois State men’s golf team finished in second place at the five-team Battle at the Warren Sunday. The Redbirds posted a team score of 600 in the two round competition at the par-71, 7,090 yard Warren Golf Course. Host school Notre Dame took home the win with a tally of 564.
Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis saw the competition as an excellent opportunity to ready his squad for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.
“We had a tough start, but we improved in the afternoon,” Kralis said. “With green complexes that are small and challenging, this is a tough golf course. This course is one that emphasizes ball control, which will be important next week and is why I was glad we played here. We have a week of practice left and we can certainly build on some things for next week. We will need a strong team effort at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship, and we certainly have a group capable of it.”
Sophomore Parker Freiburg led the Illinois State effort, carding a 148 (76-72) to finish in a tie for 7th place. Sophomore Wils Hawn followed up with a tally of 150 (77-73) to finish in a tie for 12th. Finishing in a tie for 15th, junior Ricky Hearden added a score of 152 (76-76). Senior Eric Meier provided a score of 153 (78-75) to finish in a tie for 18th, while junior Matt Solis ended the competition in a tie for 20th, after shooting a 154 (78-76). Junior Ryan Murphy completed the competition in 29th place, after recording a tally of 158 (75-83).
The Redbirds will next compete in the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Hutchinson, Kan., April 30-May 1.
