Men's Golf Finishes Day One in Third at Kemper Intercollegiate

April 15, 2013

GLENVIEW, Ill. - The Illinois State men's golf team battled with strong winds and steady rain throughout the day, finishing day one in third place with a team score of 590 (298-292) at the Kemper Intercollegiate Tournament Monday.

After coming off a strong second-place finish at the NYX Hoosier Invitational, the Redbirds continued to battle, as weather conditions posed early problems in the first half of the day.

"Playing conditions were very difficult," head coach Ray Kralis said. "We got off to a slow start collectively on the first five or six holes of the day and dug ourselves a little bit of a hole, but the guys really battled their way out."

Although play started off slow, Kralis is pleased with the way his team battled through adversity and is looking forward to teeing up with day one top finishers Northwestern (567) and Ohio State (573) in the 14-team field.

"After a tough start, the team had a great second round with Parker's (Freiburg) 69 and (Ricky's) Hearden 72." Kralis said. "I loved the way the guys battled, and we are going to need that same toughness Tuesday."

Leading the Redbirds is junior Wils Hawn who carded a two-round score of 146 (72-74) to finish day one tied for ninth. Junior Parker Freiburg tallied a score of 148 (79-69) to end day one tied for 15th.

Senior Ricky Hearden fired a two-round score of 149 (77-72), one stroke better than freshman Tyler Gentilella, who carded a score of 150 (73-77) to end the day. Rounding out the lineup for the Redbirds is senior Matt Solis, who tallied a score of 157 (76-81). Senior Matt Hageman competed as an individual and fired a two-round score of 157 (79-78) to end day one.

Missouri Valley Conference foes Western Illinois finished day one in 10th with a team score of 613 (307-306), one stroke better than Bradley, who finished with a team score of 614 (312-302) to finish tied for 11th.

The Redbirds will be back on the course Tuesday to complete the final 18 holes. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
