BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With just five strokes behind the top-place finisher Indiana, the Illinois State men's golf team walked away with a second-place finish at the NYX Hoosier Invitational, carding a team score of 855 (284-287-284) Sunday. The second-place finish tied aseason best and was ISU’s best team performance of the spring season.

ISU fired the lowest final round score of the day with a mark of 294, to surpass Big 10 opponent, Michigan (865) and Missouri Valley Conference rival Evansville (894). Michigan finished third, while Evansville finished 13th in the 17-team field.

Having played so well the past two weeks, the Redbirds have gained confidence and built momentum leading into the final match of the spring season.

"Tyler (Gentilella) played like a champion and gained valuable experience and confidence with a strong second-place showing, and Matt (Solis) and Ricky (Hearden) made big contributions with top-10 finishes." head coach Ray Kralis said. "I have had a good feeling about the steps the squad is making and wasn't surprised to see it come together. They validated those feelings in the first two rounds and added an exclamation point in round three with a strong showing when everything was on the line."

The Redbirds were led by freshman Tyler Gentilella, who finished tied for second, firing a career-best score of 209 (65-72-72), his highest placed seed of year. Junior Ricky Hearden tied a season-best tallying a three-round score of 213 (72-71-70). Senior Matt Solis also carded a career-best, three-round score of 213 (74-69-70) to finish tied for ninth, along with Hearden.
