PRIMM, Nev. – The Illinois State men’s golf team finds itself in 5th place at the 15-team Jackrabbit Invitational after posting a team score of 577 Monday. The Redbirds are within two strokes of third place, while Idaho leads the field with a score of 561 at the par-72, 7090 yard Primm Valley Desert Course.

Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis liked what he saw from his team on day one.

“The guys showed their potential with a great team effort in round one,” Kralis said. “Ricky Hearden and Eric Meier posted the low rounds we have been looking for, and the others’ solid play put us right in the hunt.  It was one of the lowest team rounds in our history, and a huge boost for us at this point in the season. While we didn't keep the pace going in the afternoon, it was still a solid first day. We'll learn some things from the afternoon round, and I am confident that we'll keep our focus where it needs to be tomorrow.”

Hearden (67-74) is currently in a tie for 7th place with a score of 141 following a three-under-par performance on day one. He is followed by Meier (68-75), who carded a one-under-par 143 to put him in a tie for 12th. Sophomore Wils Hawn (71-75) added a two-over-par 146 effort to place him in a tie for 27th. With a three-over-par score of 148, junior Ryan Murphy (73-75) currently stands in a tie for 35th. Junior Matt Solis (72-77) is in a tie for 40th after ending his day with a five-over-par 149.

The Redbirds will look to finish strong in the final round, beginning Tuesday morning.  Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
