MOBILE, Ala. – The Illinois State men’s golf team concluded play at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Tuesday, finishing 12th in a field of 15 at the par-72, 7,160 yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. The Redbirds finished with a final score of 899, while Middle Tennessee State took home the intercollegiate crown with a final tally of 858.

Junior Ricky Hearden (75-74-73) led Illinois State, finishing tied for 34th in the field of 75 after posting a six-over-par score of 222. Hearden was followed by sophomore Wils Hawn (73-76-75), who ended the tournament with an eight-over-par score of 224. Senior Eric Meier (77-74-77) carded a 12-over-par 228, while junior Matt Solis (80-75-74) ended his day with a 13-over-par 229. Junior Ryan Murphy (78-74-81) recorded a 17-over-par 233.

Competing individually on the par-71, 7,051 yard Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course, junior Matt Hageman (86-85) recorded a final score of 171.

Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis saw positives in the Redbird effort.

“With such a strong field, I feel that it’s important we look at this event as an us vs. us situation, how we did compared to what we are capable of doing,” Kralis said. “We left some shots out there, and we struggled mightily on the greens, but we stayed composed amongst the adversity and I liked the way we battled. I wanted to see us finish stronger, but the last three holes got us. It’s early in the season, and I saw a number of positives that we can build on going forward. We still have a lot of work in front us, so we’re going to get right back into work mode and get ready for Samford.”

Illinois State will be back on the course March 5-6, when it will return to Alabama to compete in the Samford Invitational in Hoover, Ala.  Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
