MOBILE, Ala. – The Illinois State men’s golf team finished the first two rounds at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate with a final tally of 600 at the par-72, 7,160 yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. With one more round to be played on Tuesday, the Redbirds currently reside in 13th place. Middle Tennessee State currently leads the 15-team field with a score of 570.

Junior Ricky Hearden (75-74) and sophomore Wils Hawn (73-76) both finished the day tied for 43rd in the 75-man field with five-over-par scores of 149. Not far behind, senior Eric Meier (77-74) carded a seven-over-par 151. Coming off strong performances last week at The Match Play, juniors Ryan Murphy (78-74) and Matt Solis (80-75) posted an eight-over-par score of 152 and an 11-over-par score of 155, respectively.

Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis is hopeful that his squad will post lower scores on Tuesday.

“From a competitive standpoint, we were hoping to be sitting in a better spot,” Kralis said. “That being said, this is an extremely competitive field, and I thought we moved in the right direction in the afternoon. I thought that we were getting more out of our rounds today than we would have in the fall, but unfortunately, we had a lot of missed putts that we should have made. If we want to compete against some of the better teams in this field, we have to sink those putts. Still, we are taking the positives, and tomorrow is a big day where we can move up in the field. We can’t dwell on our missed putts, we’ve got to go out and be mentally tough. We’ll need a couple of players to step up, and I look forward to seeing who potentially emerges.”

In individual play, junior Matt Hageman (46-40) recorded a score of 86 at the par-71, 7,051 yard Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course. Hageman is 14 strokes behind the individual leader, Fletcher Johnson (38-34) of Mississippi State, who currently leads with a score of 72.

The Redbirds will look to move up in the field during the final round Tuesday, as they tee off beginning at 8:00 a.m.
