The Redbirds Finish 15th at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
Feb. 19, 2013
MOBILE. Ala. - The Illinois State men's golf team finished 15th at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate Tournament, firing a team score of 923 (303-312-308) Tuesday. The Redbirds were led by senior Ricky Hearden, who carded a three-round score of 226 (76-81-69).
"Ricky's 69 today was big, and both he and Wils Hawn had solid tournaments for this point in the season," head coach Ray Kralis said. "The younger guys can take some positives, but will also be motivated by the pain that tough rounds bring."
Junior Wils Hawn was one stroke behind Hearden with a final score of 227 (76-77-74).
Although the Redbirds fell short of meeting their expectations, highlights of improvements were seen throughout tournament play.
"This was clearly not the outcome we had hoped for, but this was a step forward in the big picture," Kralis said. "Even though it was just one round, hanging in there with some of the best teams in the country gave us a glimpse of our potential. While we learned some lessons the hard way, there is no doubt that we will be stronger going forward because of this experience."
Rounding out the lineup for the Redbirds were freshmen Tyler Gentilella, who shot a three-round score of 236 (77-74-85), five strokes better than Tyler Pope-Ferguson, who tallied a final score of 241 (74-84-73). Sophomore Josh Edison ended with a tournament score of 244 (82-80-82).
Auburn led the field with a team score of 861, followed by No. 14 Louisiana State (865) and No. 19 Illinois (870).
The Redbirds will be back on the course, March 11th, to compete at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Primm, Nevada.
