After sitting in 13th place at the end of the first day of competition, the Illinois State men's golf team stepped up to finish in 10th place in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Magnolia Crossing Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. Led by Wils Hawn, who shot a final round score of 5-under-par to finish tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard, the Redbirds ended the tournament with an overall score of 886 (303-296-287).

Head coach Ray Kralis was extremely proud of his team's accomplishments.

"I really like the growth and development of this squad," Kralis said. "Their play, mental toughness and self-control was impressive and just another glimpse of our potential. Wils was solid from start to finish and along with Parker's (Freiburg) strong round of 70, the seniors lead way to the finish."

Hawn fired six birdies in his third round for a personal best and low round of the day with a 67 and wrapped up the tournament with a total of 215 (75-73-67). Jordan Fahel finished with a score of 223 (74-76-73), and Parker Freiburg shot a 2-under-par on the final day of competition for a score of 226 (75-81-70). Kyle Meihofer ended the tournament with a 228 (79-72-77), while Tyler Gentilella finished with a 232 (80-75-77).

"I knew coming in as the 13th seed of 15 teams mainly from the south, it would be important to look at how we performed versus our own potential," Kralis added. "With the weather conditions that have plagued us this winter, this was one of the best team performances that I have been a part of. We had some adversity to deal with, but we controlled the things that we could control by keeping our emotions in check, staying in the present and believing in ourselves."

Josh Edison finished tied for 12th place out of 146 in the 2014 USA Individual Tournament with a score of 227 (75-76-15).

At the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, Auburn finished in first place with a team score of 858 (290-71-72) and Kentucky took second with an 864 (293-284-287). Clancy Waugh of Wake Forest took first on the individual leaderboard with a score of 210 (68-74-68) followed by Auburn's Niclas Carlsson, after finishing with a 212 (69-71-72)

The Redbirds will return to competition February 24-25 at the Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, Ariz.
