Men's Golf in 13th Place after Day One of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate

Feb. 17, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - In a field that has 10 top-100 ranked teams, the Illinois State men's golf team sits in 13th place after the first two rounds of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course in Mobile, Ala. Though the first round was a bit of a struggle, the Redbirds were able to better their second round score and finished the day with a total of 599 (303-296).

After a long day, head coach Ray Kralis is pleased with his team's performance and adjustment to playing outdoors.

"Monday was a solid start to the spring season, considering our time on grass has been nonexistent since the Tinervin Cup in January," Kralis said. "There were positives across the board, and I was pleased we lowered our team total in round two. There is not a weak team in the field, so I am more interested in how we do relative to our own capabilities. I am confident we'll tighten things up Tuesday and going forward as we benefit from more time outdoors."

Firing a 1-over-par on his second round, Wils Hawn leads the Redbirds with a 148 (75-73), and is tied for 28th on the individual leaderboard. Jordan Fahel finished with a total of 150 (74-76), while teammate Kyle Meihofer finished one stroke behind, after finishing his second round even, to end the day with a score of 151 (79-72). Tyler Gentilella finished with a total of 155 (80-75), and Parker Freiburg finished one stroke behind with a 156 (75-81).

Josh Edison finished the first day of the 2014 USA Individual Tournament at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course with a score of 151 (76-75) and currently tied for 10th place.

Auburn currently holds first place with a team score of 572 (290-282), while Georgia State sits in second with a team score of 577 (287-290). Auburn's Niclas Carlsson is tied for first place with Middle Tennessee State's Payne Denman with a score of 140 (69-71) (68-72), respectively.

Illinois State is only three strokes away from being in the top10 and hopes to improve from Monday. The third and final round will begin Tuesday with the first group teeing off at 8 a.m. (CST).
