ORLANDO – The Illinois State men’s golf team lost its morning match against DePaul, 3.5 - 2.5, ending its run at The Match Play Tuesday at the Watson Course at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Head men’s golf coach Ray Kralis, while disappointed with the early exit, saw a lot of positives from his team.

“It looked like through the first nine holes we were in control, but in the last nine, we had some difficulties,” Kralis said. “There were some uncharacteristic mistakes from our players. We were in too much of a giving mood, and it’s hard to fight back when you do that. However, I think we learned a lot about ourselves here through this experience. It was fantastic to see Matt Solis and Ryan Murphy win all of their matches. It was certainly great to see Ryan come out of the gate strong throughout the tournament and set a great pace for us, as he dominated all of his matches. I believe we’re in a better position to succeed than in the fall, and I saw a lot of encouraging things that we are taking with us as we move forward.”

Playing in ideal conditions, junior Ricky Hearden lost to Ben Westley 4-and-3. The Blue Demons’ Russell Budd defeated sophomore Wils Hawn 3-and-2. Adding to his perfect resume at The Match Play, Solis finished off Mortiz Ackerhans 2-and-1. Senior Eric Meier finished halfed with Jan Juelicher, while freshman Jordan Fahel lost to John Pavelko 2-and-1. Finishing with a perfect record in The Match Play, Murphy ended his day with a victory over Alex Lloyd 5-and-4.

The Redbirds will resume play on Feb. 20 in Mobile, Ala., at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate hosted by South Alabama.
