NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State senior defensive end Brent Hawkins has accepted an invitation and will join Redbird teammate Ryan Hoffman to play in the 60th annual Hula Bowl on Jan. 21, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The tandem becomes the first pair of Illinois State teammates to participate in the same college football all-star game in the history of the Redbird football program.
Both Hawkins and Hoffman, who will report on Jan. 14, will be making their first trip to the island of Hawai'i.
"This is just a great thing," Hawkins said. "This is one of the bowls I really wanted to go to, since I've never been to Hawai'i, and having another teammate with me makes it even better.
"Going to this game is just another opportunity to get Illinois State football out there. This says a lot about our coaches too. Not just us coming along as players, but them coming along as coaches. They did a great job and we get to reap the benefits of it."
Hawkins, the 2005 Gateway Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year and runner-up for the 2005 Buck Buchanan Award, finished the regular season leading all of Division I-AA in tackles for loss (26.5) and forced fumbles (7), while ranking second in sacks (17). His sack total set the Illinois State and Gateway Conference single season records, while he also claimed the school mark for tackles for loss and forced fumbles in a season.
The game will be televised on ESPN beginning at 6 p.m. central time. Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville will lead the East team, while Washington's Tyrone Willingham will coach the West.
