ST. LOUIS - The Missouri Valley Football Conference handed out its final postseason awards Tuesday and Illinois State defensive linemen Eric Brunner and Colton Underwood were named to the MVFC All-Academic Team, as voted on by the league's sports information directors.

Nominees had to be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). The student-ath-letes must have also reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions (freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution. League sports information directors voted on the team by designat-ing 11 players for first-team honors and 11 players for second-team honors.

Brunner was named a MVFC All-Academic First Team selection for the second-straight season and was named to the team for the third time in his career at ISU, after earning second-team plaudits in 2009. The senior defensive tackle was also named a First Team All-MVFC selection for the second-straight time in 2011 and was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District V Team in a vote conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Brunner holds a 3.36 GPA in accounting and will graduate in December.

The Greendale, Wis., native increased his production in 2011 and was the leader of the Redbird defense, which led the conference in total defense (294.8 ypg). One of four team captains, Brunner set career highs with 4.5 sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss, which tied for fifth in the conference and ranked third on the team with 55 tackles. He also added a forced fumble, blocked a kick, recovered three fumbles, broke up two passes and tallied three quarterback hurries.

Underwood, a sophomore who maintains a 3.39 GPA in marketing, was selected to the MVFC All-Academic Second Team after he ranked second on the team with six sacks and added 9.5 tackles-for-loss, which tied for 11th in the Valley. The Washington, Ill., native also recorded 38 tackles, forced three fumbles, broke up two passes and had six quarterback hurries in his second full season at ISU. Underwood was also recognized in the All-MVFC voting and was chosen as an honorable mention selection by the league's head coaches, sports information directors and members of the media.
