Nov. 10, 2011
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State football senior defensive tackle Eric Brunner was recognized for his work on and off the field Thursday, when he was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District V Team by the Academic All-America® Committee for the second time in his career.
Brunner was one of 27 players named to the District V Division I team in the vote conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Brunner, who was named to the 2010 Capital One Academic All-District V Team, maintains a 3.36 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in accounting at Illinois State and was named the Herschel O. Brock Endowed Scholarship recipient for the 2011-12 academic year at ISU.
A 2010 All-Missouri Valley Football Conference First-Team selection, Brunner has started in all 10 games at defensive tackle in 2011 for the Redbirds and has recorded 50 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 11 tackles-for-loss for the ISU defense that ranks No. 12 in the country in total defense. The Greendale, Wis., native has also forced a fumble, blocked a kick, recovered three fumbles and broken up a pair of passes while serving as one of the team's four captains.
Brunner has earned several accolades for his academic prowess in the past as well. He was named a 2010 MVFC All-Academic First Team honoree and capped off the year by being named to the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) Academic All-Star Team. He was also named the W.F. Ruebush Endowed Scholarship recipient for the 2010-11 school year.
CoSIDA classifies schools into eight districts and teams are chosen in each district (Division I, Division II, Division III and College Division). First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
To be nominated for the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Team, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form and no student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
