ST. LOUIS - After helping the Redbirds rush for 273 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in a 31-7 win over Western Illinois Saturday, Illinois State senior center Cal McCarthy was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week Monday by the league office.

The honor is the second for McCarthy in his career at Illinois State, after previously earning the award last season for his performance in the team's win over Youngstown State. He becomes the sixth Redbird to be honored by the conference office this season, joining fellow senior offensive lineman Nick Bledsoe, who was named the league's lineman of the week after a strong performance against Missouri State (Oct. 8).

McCarthy graded out at 92 percent, was credited with eight knockdowns against the Leathernecks and helped three different players rush for over 50 yards and a touchdown each. The 273 yards rushing by Illinois State was its second-best rushing output of the season, behind a 314-yard performance at Missouri State.

The Shorewood, Ill., native has started 21-straight games at center for the Redbirds and has started a total of 30 games at the position in his four-year career at ISU. A 2010 All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Second-Team selection, McCarthy also anchors the Redbird offensive line that has only allowed six sacks all season and ranks fourth in the country and leads the Missouri Valley Football Conference in fewest sacks allowed.

McCarthy and the nationally-ranked Redbirds have a bye week, before returning to the field to host No. 5 Northern Iowa in the regular-season finale Nov. 19 for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Hancock Stadium in Normal, Ill., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com, with Scott Warmann and Danan Hughes on the call.
