Bledsoe Named MVFC Offensive Lineman of the Week
Oct. 10, 2011
ST. LOUIS - After helping the Redbirds rush for a season-high 316 yards on the ground in a road win at Missouri State Saturday, Illinois State senior left guard Nick Bledsoe was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week Monday by the league office.
The honor is the second for Bledsoe in his career at Illinois State, after previously earning the award Nov. 2, 2009, for his performance in the team's win over Missouri State. He becomes the second Redbird to be honored by the conference office this season, joining freshman cornerback Mike Banks who was named the league's Newcomer of the Week Sept. 24.
Bledsoe graded out at over 90 percent and helped the Redbirds dominate the rushing game against the Bears. The Wheeling, Ill., native was credited with seven knockdowns and led the way for Ashton Leggett, who rushed for a career-high 178 yards and two rushing touchdowns against Missouri State. The 316 rushing yards were the most for the Redbirds since 2008.
He was also part of the Redbird offensive line that ranks fourth in the country and leads the Missouri Valley Football Conference in sacks allowed. The Redbirds did not allow a sack to the Bears and have only allowed three all season, which averages out to a half sack a game given up to opponents.
Bledsoe and the rest of the Redbirds (3-3, 2-2 MVFC) return home Saturday, Oct. 15, for a Homecoming matchup against non-conference foe and future MVFC member South Dakota (4-2, 1-0 GWC). Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Hancock Stadium.
