Redbirds Ranked As High As No. 19 In National Polls
Sept. 27, 2010
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State football team picked up its first national ranking since 2007 last week at No. 25, but moved up to No. 19 in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll and moved into in The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25 Poll at the No. 23 position for the first time Monday.
Coming off a thrilling 44-41 double-overtime win over Missouri Valley Football Conference foe Missouri State Saturday, the Redbirds moved up in both polls. ISU received 171 points in the FCS Coaches Poll to move up six spots and moved into the top-25 in the TSN poll at No. 23 with 522 points, after receiving the second-highest point total among teams not in the top-25 last week.
For the first time since Oct. 13, 2008, five Missouri Valley Football Conference teams are nationally-ranked this week and at least four MVFC teams have been ranked in the Top 25 in every poll this year. Five MVFC teams have been ranked the same week 19 times in league history. North Dakota State is the highest-rated Valley Football school at No. 13 (TSN), followed by Northern Iowa at No. 17 (TSN) and the Redbirds at No. 19 (FCS). Youngstown State also moved into the rankings this week in both polls and Southern Illinois maintained rankings in both polls despite a loss to the Penguins over the weekend.
The nationally-ranked Redbirds will return to the field Saturday for a matchup against their in-state and conference rival Southern Illinois, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hancock Stadium. The game will be the first between the two schools in which both are nationally ranked since 2006, when the No. 5 Redbirds defeated the No. 7 Salukis at Hancock Stadium on Oct. 14.
