NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior offensive lineman Rocco Ammons was recognized Friday for his dedication on the field and in the classroom, when he was named the Herschel O. Brock Endowed Scholarship recipient for the 2013-14 academic year. Ammons is the sixth recipient of the endowment, which was established in 2008 by the Brock family.

The Herschel O. Brock Endowed Scholarship is presented annually to a Redbird male student-athlete who carries at least a 3.0 grade-point average (GPA). Brock lived in Bloomington, Ill., for 50 years and was a dedicated community leader and businessman. Throughout his life, he maintained close relationships with several Illinois State head coaches and was a loyal friend of Redbird Athletics.

"Rocco is a very good student, a hard worker and does everything the right way," football head coach Brock Spack said. "He's a grinder and has been an excellent member of our football program over the past three seasons. Sometimes he's like a church mouse and doesn't say much, but he certainly leads by example on the field and off."

Ammons has played in 21 games for the Redbirds over the past three seasons and has started in 18 of those contests. The Warrenville, Ill., native started all 13 games at right guard for the Redbirds in 2012 and helped block for Darrelynn Dunn, who rushed 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns, the most for a Redbird back since 2006. Ammons was also a key member of the offensive line unit that allowed just 14 sacks all season, which ranked No. 14 in the country in fewest sacks allowed.

In the classroom, Ammons maintains a 3.14 cumulative GPA in industrial engineering and renewable energy.

"I'm thankful that coach Spack and the Brock family have selected me as the recipient for this endowment," Ammons said. "It's good that the Brock Family started this scholarship to award academic success, in addition to athletic success. I've worked hard in both areas to get better and the recognition is humbling.
