NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State entered the fourth quarter trailing Missouri State, 42-24, in the debut of the Gateway Football Conference's Game of the Week on Sept. 25, 1999, at Plaster Field in Springfield, Mo., but 22 unanswered points fueled the Redbirds' 46-42 come-from-behind victory in one of the most remarkable college football games. This historic comeback, which began ISU's run to the Gateway crown, has been selected as the second-most memorable Redbird football game in Redbird All-Access' countdown of the best televised games in recent history. The entire telecast of the game will be available at 1 p.m. today on Redbird All-Access.

This classic game was simply that - classic from start to finish. Illinois State's Aveion Cason returned the opening kick-off 100 yards for a touchdown, but the Bears responded with a touchdown of their own and evened the score 7-7, at the 11:08 mark in the first quarter.

Back-to-back Missouri State touchdown runs pushed the Bear lead to 21-7, but the Redbirds scored 10 points in the second quarter on a 25-yard field goal by Jake Strader and a 7-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Glenn to Jon Laurenti and cut the lead to 21-17 at the break.

With the exception of Glenn's 9-yard touchdown run, the third quarter was all Missouri State, as the Bears scored three touchdowns to take a 42-24 lead which set the stage for ISU's comeback. On the Redbirds' first possession of the final quarter, Glenn connected with Cason on a 36-yard touchdown pass to close the gap to 42-30, but Strader missed the point after attempt. ISU regained possession, when Vito Golson recovered Strader's onside kick attempt. Five plays later, Illinois State trailed 42-37, as Glenn completed a 9-yard pass to Walter James.

On the ensuing Bears' drive, Missouri State quarterback Jay Rodgers' pass was intercepted by Alfred Corbin, who returned it 26-yards for a touchdown and a 43-42 lead with 9:47 remaining. ISU secured the victory when Strader added a 26-yard field goal with a minute left. Cason finished the game with 305 yards of total offense. James led ISU in rushing with 81 yards and Glenn passed for 317 yards and three touchdowns on 29-for-41 passing. Defensively, Adam Waugh collected 12 tackles.
