NORMAL, Ill. - Another local football player will be returning to the Twin Cities to play for Illinois State, as head coach Brock Spack announced the addition of transfer Adam Rebholz to the Redbird roster Tuesday.

Rebholz, the younger brother of Redbird long snapper Nathan Rebholz, will have four years of eligibility remaining for ISU after sitting out the 2009 as a redshirt at Illinois. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Bloomington, Ill., native was a walk-on at Illinois as a quarterback, but will likely make the switch to defense for the Redbirds in 2010.

"We liked Adam out of high school and tried to get him to come here initially," Spack said. "We think he is going to develop into a very good football player and believe he has a chance to be a good safety in our system. He was a good quarterback and athlete in high school, so we believe those skills will translate well into the secondary for us. He's got four years left, is a very bright player and was a winner at the high school level here locally, so we are excited to have him back in town and part of the program."

Rebholz was named the Bloomington Pantagraph Area Player of the Year and an all-state selection, after leading the Bloomington Central Catholic Saints to the class 4A state championship in 2008. In the championship game against Aurora Christian, Rebholz passed for 319 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 80 yards and two more scores. He passed for nearly 2,500 yards as a senior, while rushing for 609 and accounting for 38 touchdowns. An all-around athlete, Rebholz earned a total of seven varsity letters in football, basketball and track during his prep career.

Illinois State opens the 2010 season Thursday, Sept. 2, against Central Missouri. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Hancock Stadium.
