Ohio State Transfer Perkins, Juco Punter Laros Join ISU
July 1, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State football added two players to its squad Monday, welcoming former Ohio State linebacker David Perkins and Citrus Junior College punter C.J. Laros. Both players have enrolled in classes at Illinois State and will participate in fall camp this August.
“Perkins brings a high level of athleticism to our team,” head coach Brock Spack said. “He is the type of player who can play on the line of scrimmage or move back to play either outside linebacker position. He is a guy we can do a lot with.”
Perkins played in nine games for the Buckeyes as a true freshman in 2013, registering six tackles and a pass breakup during the season. He recorded a pair of tackles in the team’s 31-16 win over Central Florida and recorded a career-best three stops in a 29-22 overtime win over conference foe Purdue. Perkins will help solidify the Redbird linebacking corps that lost three starters from 2012. He will join Alex Donnelly, Pat Meehan and Brandon Westphal to give more depth to the unit, especially from the outside linebacker position.
Tabbed as the 13th-ranked "athlete" nationally by Rivals.com and a 4-star recruit coming out of Washington High School in South Bend, Ind., Perkins totaled 103 tackles as a senior with 22 tackles-for-loss, including seven sacks. He also had eight forced fumbles and nine pass break-ups in his final prep season. A dual threat, Perkins also rushed for 1,311 yards with 15 touchdowns as a senior, while recording 20 receptions for 291 yards. His performance on the field helped lead Washington to its first state championship game in 38 years.
Laros comes to Illinois State from Citrus Junior College and has extensive punting experience.
“We wanted to make sure we had a capable older punter that could come in and play and had experience,” Spack said. “Laros is a great athlete and has played Australian rules football, rugby and football. He’s been in the United States for a few years, and we think he is a good athlete.”
Perkins and Laros will join the rest of their teammates on the field when players report for fall workouts on August 2.
