NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head football coach Brock Spack awarded sophomore Bryce Kiser the W.E. Ruebush Endowed Scholarship for the 2012-13 academic year, for his dedication on the field of play and in the classroom.

The W.E. Ruebush (REW-bush) Endowed Scholarship is presented annually to a Redbird football player who carries at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). The scholarship was established on October 22, 2005, by the W.E. Ruebush Foundation, which was funded to provide journalism and athletic scholarships. In addition to the scholarship at Illinois State, the foundation has also funded higher education awards at Iowa and Florida.

The scholarship is named for the former Illinois State football team captain in 1932. Ruebush, who died in 1991, lettered four years as a center on the Redbird football team, before graduating in 1932. He also lettered two seasons in baseball and basketball and was active in the Gamma Phi Circus, the "N" Club, band and orchestra, Commerce Club, Varsity Club and the Philadelphian Debate Society.

"Bryce is very worthy of this recognition and you couldn't ask for a better representative of your program," Spack said. "He's a great student, a hard worker and a very tough football player. He's had to have surgery to repair injuries on both of his shoulders in the last year and has never let that affect his work ethic in the classroom or in his rehab. It's very difficult for student-athletes to come back from one surgery, let alone two, but he has done a great job and is ahead of schedule, and he should have a bright future for us."

Kiser was recruited to Illinois State in 2010 as a tight end and was redshirted. Last season, he was converted over to the defensive line for the Redbirds and played in five games as a defensive end. The Royal Center, Ind., native finished the 2011 season with three tackles and had a career game against Morehead State, when he forced a fumble and recorded a sack in the win for ISU. A communications studies major, Kiser maintains a 3.27 cumulative GPA.

"I'm very humbled and honored to be recognized with the W.E. Ruebush Endowed Scholarship," Kiser said. "I get so much support, not only on the field from my teammates and coaches, but also from the staff at the Karin Bone Athletics Study Center and it's because of their assistance that I have been able to succeed. Also, to be put on the same list with guys like Jordan Neukirch, Eric Brunner and Cliffton Gordon is a tremendous honor for me. They were all great leaders and even better people off the field. I hope to continue my progression as a student-athlete and continue to earn the respect of the people responsible for this recognition."
