May 30, 2011
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior wide receiver Tyrone Walker joined 38 fellow Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) wide receivers on the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) preseason watch list, Monday, for the organization's 2011 CFPA Wide Receiver Award.
Walker is the second Redbird player to be recognized by the CFPA on one of its preseason positional watch lists. Fellow junior Matt Brown was named to the organization's quarterback watch list May 16.
The purpose of the College Football Performance Awards is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
A 2010 All-Missouri Valley Football Conference Second-Team selection, Walker led Illinois State last season with 974 yards receiving on 59 catches and hauled in 12 touchdown passes, the second-highest single-season mark in school history. The Indianapolis, Ind., native ranked second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with those 12 touchdown catches and was second with 974 yards. He also ranked 13th in the country with 88.55 receiving yards per game.
Walker was named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week and The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Offensive Player of the Week, after he set new career-highs with 206 yards receiving and three receiving touchdowns in a victory against Youngstown State. Overall, he posted five games with 100-plus yards receiving, including three-straight from Oct. 23-Nov. 6.
Several other MVFC receivers were recognized on the preseason watch list. Indiana State's Justin Hilton, Missouri State's Jermaine Saffold, South Dakota State's Tyrel Kool and Western Illinois' Terriun Crump joined Walker as representatives from the several high-powered offenses in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Walker and the Redbirds will open the 2011 season Sept. 1 at Eastern Illinois in the 100th meeting between the two schools in the series history.
