NORMAL, Ill. - For the second-straight semester, the Illinois State football program set a team grade-point average (GPA) record, after the team recorded a cumulative GPA of 2.759 during the Fall 2013 semester.

The mark bested the team's previous high GPA of 2.717 set during the Spring 2013 semester.

"I'm very proud of our players and all the hard work they put into their academics this past semester," ISU head coach Brock Spack said. "They did a great job and our coaching staff, the staff at the Karin L. Bone Athletics Study Center including Dr. Paul Downey, Kyle Sny and Keenan Wimbley, and our academic advisors, including Julie Paska, were crucial in helping them achieve their goals in the classroom."

A total of 47 players were named to the AFNI Honor Roll, after securing at least a 3.0 GPA and six players recorded perfect 4.0 marks during the semester. Long snapper and All-American Chris Highland, fullback Matt Meyers, defensive linemen Adam Conley and Jack Lipinsky, offensive lineman Jake Wienhoff and receiver Scott Kuehn each received top marks in the classroom to lead the way.

In addition, 12 players received their degrees from Illinois State during December commencement ceremonies.

"They took the bull by the horns and dedicated themselves to not only being good football players, but better students," Spack stated. "We are still not where we want to be and still have some work to do, as we have set a team GPA goal of 3.0, but I am very proud of them for this accomplishment and we will look to better the number for the third semester in a row this spring."
