Jafar (ja-FAR) Williams enters his second season on the Illinois State staff as the wide receivers coach.
In his first season with the Redbirds, Williams instructed a second-team all-conference selection in Jason Horton. In addition to Horton's team-high 40 catches, Williams also mentored three other receivers who posted 10-or-more catches on the season. Eyad Salem finished with 31 grabs, while Kevett Mickle added 28 and Kelvin Chandler finished the season with 12 catches.
In the two years prior to coming to ISU, Williams was the wide receivers coach at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. He also served as the minority recruiting coordinator for all of the Greyhounds' athletic teams. In 2005, Moravian claimed its first Eastern College Athletic Conference championship in school history.
Before joining the coaching ranks, Williams was a standout receiver for Maryland and lettered from 2000-03. He currently ranks No. 13 all-time in Maryland history for career receptions and career receiving yards. Williams finished his Terrapin career with a pair of touchdowns in Maryland's 41-7 win over West Virginia in the 2004 Gator Bowl.
After his collegiate career, Williams spent time with the Washington Redskins, before beginning his two-year coaching stint at Moravian College.
A native of Philadelphia, Williams received a bachelor's of science degree in health and human performance from Maryland in 2003.
