Jered Hooker enters his second season with the Redbirds, after joining the ISU staff four days prior to the first game of the 2007 season. In 2008, Hooker will turn his attention to the administrative facet of college football.
Before assuming his new role, Hooker spent more than a decade working extensively with kickers and punters.
Prior to joining the Illinois State staff, Hooker spent the spring of 2007 as an assistant coach for the Bloomington Extreme, a member of the United Indoor Football league. With the Extreme, he also worked with special teams and handled football operations.
Before working with the Extreme, Hooker had an eight-year stint at McKendree from 1996-2002 as an assistant coach. With the Bearcats, Hooker mentored Brian Schneider, a two-time NAIA All-America kicker, and Mark Albertini, who was invited to the Cleveland Browns mini-camp following his senior season.
Hooker also spent eight summers working with the kickers and punters at Illinois, as part of Ron Turner's summer camp staff. While working at the camp, Hooker organized workouts with current New Orleans Saints punter Steve Weatherford, who credits Hooker for his increased hang time and overall fundamentals.
Hooker also worked with the development of two former NFL punters in Reggie Hodges (St. Louis Rams, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles) and Matt Minnes (Chicago Bears).
Hooker and his wife, Jane, have four grown sons, Eric, Rich, Tim and Joe.
