Nelson, Zeisloft Named Valley Scholar-Athletes of the Week

Dec. 27, 2013

ST. LOUIS - Guards Chloe Nelson and Nick Zeisloft were named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, as announced by the league office. It is the second honor for Zeisloft this season and the first for Nelson.

Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

Nelson led the Redbirds in points for the fifth and sixth time this season against Princeton (Dec. 18) and Milwaukee (Dec. 22). Against Princeton, Nelson had nine points, one assist and two steals in 31 minutes. Then, at Milwaukee, she connected on five field goals and three free throws for 13 points, and dished out four assists in 28 minutes. The senior guard played below her season average because of foul trouble in the first half at Milwaukee, but still managed to be the leading scorer.

On the season, Nelson is the only Redbird to average double figures with 13.6 points per game and leads the team in assists with 27. Nelson is a psychology major with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.96.

As a redshirt sophomore on the court this season, Zeisloft is averaging 6.4 points, shooting 35 percent from the field and 4.3 rebounds per game so far this season. Against Tennessee State (Dec. 19), Zeisloft scored five points, pulled down six boards, which led the Redbirds in the game, and recorded three assists in 32 minutes of play. In the win against in-state rival DePaul, Zeisloft was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line for 11 points. He also had two rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes.

Throughout his entire academic career at Illinois State, Zeisloft has excelled in the classroom, earning a 3.74 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in finance. He is a three-time AFNI Honor Roll member, while amassing a perfect 4.0 GPA during two out of his first four semesters.

Redbird soccer players Kyla Cross and Aryn Newsome, who won the honor twice, volleyball's Kaitlyn Early and women's basketball Alexis Foley were the other Redbirds to earn the academic weekly honor.

The women's basketball team returns home to Doug Collins Court Monday at 7:05 p.m., to take on Denver, after three-straight road games. The men's team will return to action Thursday, Jan. 2, when it travels to Springfield, Mo., to open Missouri Valley Conference action at Missouri State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
