ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior forward Jackie Carmichael is the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Thursday. Carmichael received the honor for the second time this season and the fourth time in his career, after helping the Redbirds to wins against Dayton and Austin Peay last week.

Carmichael averaged a double-double with 21.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game during Illinois State's two wins last week, including the 74-73 victory at Dayton (Dec. 19), followed by the 83-57 win over Austin Peay (Dec. 22). Carmichael matched his season high with 12 rebounds at Dayton. He also netted 25 points to tally his sixth 20-plus-point game of the year and the 16th of his career. The Manhattan, Kan., native was 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from the field and 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) at the free throw line. He also blocked two shots and collected one steal and one assist.

For the second-consecutive game, Carmichael set the tone early by scoring the first four points against the Flyers with a jumper and a dunk. Later in the game, with 1:59 remaining and the Redbirds leading by a small margin, 71-67, Carmichael converted a key three-point play after getting fouled while scoring a jumper. His final points proved to be the difference, as ISU won, 74-73.

In Illinois State's win over Austin Peay Saturday afternoon, Carmichael earned his 25th-career double-double, and fourth of the season, with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He shot 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) from the field, and Carmichael also contributed one block and one assist. He slammed the final of three-consecutive Redbird dunks during a 10-0 run after Austin Peay had tied the game, 26-26. The Redbirds went on to win, 83-57.

Carmichael is now averaging a team-high 18.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, which both rank second in the Missouri Valley Conference. He also leads the league with 26 blocked shots (2.2 per game), and Carmichael has 158 career blocks, which is two away from Illinois State's career record. The senior forward ranks 24th on ISU's career-scoring list, with 1,224 points, eighth on the career-field goal percentage list with a 52.3 percent clip, sixth on the career-free throws list with 331, and 10th on the career-rebounding list with 732. Carmichael has now netted double figures in 10 out of 12 games this year, and 56 total during his career.
