ST. LOUIS - Illinois State senior forward Jackie Carmichael is the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday. Carmichael received the honor for the third time in his career, after helping the Redbirds begin the 2012-13 season with a 3-0 record.

Carmichael set or tied a career high in four categories, including points (27), field goals (13), field goal attempts (20) and assists (3) in Illinois State's season-opening win against UC Santa Barbara, Nov. 12. Carmichael's 27 points were the most scored by a Redbird since Bryant Allen netted 29 on Jan. 13, 2012 versus Creighton. Carmichael also recorded his 22nd-career double-double, as he added 10 rebounds.

The Manhattan, Kan., native again led the Redbirds offensively with a 21-point performance during ISU's overtime win at Drexel Nov. 15. He also blocked four shots against the Dragons, none bigger than a block with under two minutes to play in regulation, followed by a layup on the other end to tie the game, 73-73. Then, with Drexel leading, 75-73, Carmichael was fouled with 2.0 seconds remaining and proceeded to hit two pressure-packed free throws to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Carmichael again hit two more charity shots with less than 30 seconds remaining to help seal the ISU road win against the preseason Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) favorite, which earned votes in the preseason AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches polls. He finished the game with a 13-for-20 free throw shooting performance, which matched his career-high for free throw attempts.

Carmichael helped ISU improve to 3-0 with an eight-point effort against Delaware State, Nov. 18. He is now leading the team with 18.7 points averaged on 61 percent field goal shooting and 75 percent free throw shooting through ISU's first three games. Carmichael's 40-minute average would translate into 33.9 points, which is No. 12 among all players nationally. He has also moved up to 35th on the all-time Redbird scoring list, with 1,061 career-points, 15th on the career-rebounding list, with 653 and third on the career-blocked shots record, with 140. Carmichael has recorded double-figures in 48-career games.

This week's Valley Player of the Week award is the first for Illinois State since Carmichael won it Jan. 30, 2012. That was the lone player of the week honor awarded to the Redbirds last season.

Carmichael and ISU continue play at home in the South Padre Island, Texas Invitational, with a matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson scheduled for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (309) 438-8000.
