Will Robinson Endowed Scholarship Presented to Cousin
Oct. 24, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior guard Anthony Cousin is the 2012-13 recipient of the Will Robinson Endowed Scholarship, as announced by head coach Dan Muller Wednesday. The scholarship honors Robinson, the late Redbird basketball coach from 1970-75.
"Will Robinson was certainly a pioneer in all of basketball and a heck of a coach," Muller said. "Anthony should be very proud to represent Coach Robinson, and he is well-deserving."
Robinson was the first African-American Division I college head basketball coach to serve at a predominantly white university. Robinson excelled as a high school coach, college coach and NBA administrator prior to his passing in April 2008. A 2003 Missouri Valley Conference Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Robinson worked in the Detroit Pistons' front office for nearly 30 years after leaving Illinois State.
Proceeds from the 1994 Doug Collins Chicago Golf Outing and a special announcement reception established the Will Robinson Scholarship. The scholarship also funds an internship with the Pistons.
"Anthony is an extremely hard worker and tough competitor, and I am sure Coach Robinson would have loved to coach him," Muller said. "Thank you to all who have contributed to the Will Robinson Endowed Scholarship."
Cousin played in 34 games with 14 starting assignments last season. He ranked second on the team with 82 assists and did not commit a single turnover in the three games of the 2012 Valley Tournament, in 59 minutes of play. Cousin also dished out a career-best eight assists against Illinois, Nov. 23, 2011, and did not commit a turnover in 33 minutes of play. He finished the season averaging 4.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.
