Geoffrey Allen Granted Waiver; Eligible to Play This Season
Oct. 22, 2012
NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State redshirt sophomore guard Geoffrey Allen will be eligible to play during the 2012-13 men's basketball season based on a waiver granted by the NCAA Monday. Allen will not be forced to miss a season of competition, despite transferring to ISU from Eastern Washington.
While NCAA rules require men's basketball transfers to sit out during their first season at a new school, Allen received a waiver allowing him to play immediately because of two primary reasons. First, he left Eastern Washington following a coaching change. Second, after playing at Eastern Washington as a freshman during the 2010-11 season, he underwent shoulder surgery and did not play in 2011-12. Therefore, Allen has not played college basketball since 2010-11. Eastern Washington was supportive during ISU's efforts to secure the NCAA's waiver for Allen.
Based on the waiver, Allen is eligible to play three more seasons with Illinois State. He will begin this year as a redshirt sophomore. The Los Angeles native played in 20 games at Eastern Washington during the 2010-11 season, averaging 2.2 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Allen played an average of 10.7 minutes per game and finished the season with nine steals and three blocked shots.
The Redbirds start the 2012-13 campaign with an exhibition game Nov. 5 against Quincy, followed by the season-opener Nov. 12 versus UC Santa Barbara. Ticket information is available by calling (309) 438-8000.
