NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior guard Tyler Brown will be expected to exemplify leadership skills during his final season as a Redbird, which begins in less than a month. Brown, who was named the recipient of the Milt Weisbecker Endowed Scholarship Friday, can utilize his scholarship's namesake as a role-model. After all, Weisbecker was one of the most effective leaders in ISU Athletics history.
The Weisbecker Endowed Scholarship honors the late ISU Director of Athletics from the 1960s and 1970s. Established in 1990, the Weisbecker Endowed Scholarship is named for the man who led Illinois State's program into NCAA Division I status more than 35 years ago and stayed close to the ISU athletics program, even as his career moved on to other positions at Illinois State. The Weisbecker Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior men's basketball player with a commitment to academics and competition.
"Milt Weisbecker was a pioneer in collegiate athletics, and anybody who receives this scholarship is truly blessed," Illinois head men's basketball coach Dan Muller said. "Tyler Brown is a deserving candidate. He's been doing great in the classroom, and he's primed to have a special senior year."
Brown was named to the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team, becoming the first Redbird since Champ Oguchi (2009) to earn the honor. He averaged 13.7 points per game to rank second on the team in scoring, and he averaged 3.8 rebounds while dishing out 79 assists.
However, the Owensboro, Ky., native saved some of his most significant contributions for late in the season. He earned a spot on the 2012 Valley All-Tournament Team, after averaging a team-best 16 points per game in St. Louis. He also averaged 24.5 points per game during the two games of the National Invitation Tournament, and he shot a combined 13-for-14 from three-point range. Muller said Brown will proudly represent what the Weisbecker Scholarship stands for.
"We appreciate everyone who contributed to this scholarship, and we all appreciate everything that Milt Weisbecker did for ISU Athletics," Muller said.
The Milt Weisbecker Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
