Hoopfest Kicks Off ISU Homecoming Weekend

The Illinois State men's and women's basketball teams participated in Hoopfest Friday night inside historic Horton Field House. The fun-filled night included, team scrimmages, a three-point contest and dunk contest and a few dance routines.
In the three-point shootout, Katie Broadway and Trey Blue teamed up for a first round score of 16, while Katy Winge and John Wilkins combined for 14 treys. Both groups moved onto the championship round. Alison Seberger and Nick Zeisloft recorded 13 threes, but fell out of the competition. In the championship round, Broadway and Trey combined for 15 shots behind the arc, but Wilkins and Winge were the three-point champions with 16 buckets.
Moving on to the dunk contest, four Redbird men's basketball players participated in the competition. After two dunk attempts, John Jones had 71 points, Darious Clark recorded 63, Jackie Carmichael totaled 73 and Tyler Brown had a perfect score of 80 points. Carmichael and Brown advanced to the championship round. The duo each recorded a perfect score in their first attempt. On the final attempt, Brown got the crowd on their feet, but Carmichael's dunk over Reggie Redbird sealed the deal, earning Carmichael the dunk contest champion.
During the women's basketball scrimmage, the Red team defeated the Black team, 25-21. Alexis Jenkins led all scorers with eight points, while Jamie Russell had seven. Broadway and Candace Sykes each netted five points. Maddie Oliver grabbed three rebounds, while Broadway, Russell and Sykes each collected two boards. The Black team out-rebounded the Red team 10-3, but the Red team had three steals compared to the Black team's two.
In the men's basketball scrimmage, the White team topped the Red team, 36-34. Carmichael led all scorers with 11 points in the men's basketball scrimmage, while Anthony Cousin had nine and Brown added eight. Wilkins, Jordan Threloff and Nick Zeisloft each collected six points. Carmichael brought down three boards, while Johnny Hill, Trey Blue, Zeisloft and Threloff each grabbed two. The Red team out-rebounded the White, 4-1, but the White team collected 11 boards to the Red team's seven.
The Homecoming festivities will continue Saturday with the parade at 10 a.m., followed by the football game against South Dakota at Hancock Stadium at 3 p.m.
