NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior forward Jon Ekey is the recipient of the Bob and Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship as announced by Redbird men's basketball coach Dan Muller Friday. The scholarship honors a pair of longtime ISU basketball fans.

"Jon Ekey is well-deserving of the Weber scholarship," Muller said. "I knew Bob Weber when he was here, and I was fortunate and blessed to go see him a couple of months ago, before he passed. He was a great fan and a good friend."

Ekey played in all 35 games last season, made 32 starts and averaged nine points per game. He ranked second on the team in total rebounds (170) and tallied a career-best 13 rebounds in back-to-back games at Northern Iowa (Dec. 27) and Southern Illinois (Jan.1). The Independence, Mo., native also collected 16 double-digit scoring efforts and at least one three-pointer in 28 games, and two or more in 19 contests.

"Jon is a hard-worker, excellent student, great in the community, and I know that Bob and Audrey would be excited to know that Jon was representing them and their name, with their scholarship," Muller said. "We appreciate the support of the entire Weber family."

Along with the Weber scholarship, Ekey earned the Prairie Farms/MVC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week four times last season (Nov. 24, Dec. 16, Jan. 4 and Jan. 13) and was named to the All-Valley Scholar-Athlete First-Team at the end of the season. He also earned National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) honors following the 2011-12 campaign.

The Weber scholarship was established in 2006 by Bob Weber in honor of his late wife Audrey, longtime Redbird fans and supporters. The Webers became men's basketball season ticket holders in 1974, football season ticket holders in the mid-1980's and became women's basketball season ticket holders in 2003. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the men's or women's basketball team.

"People who care that much about the university and our programs that they are willing to put up their own money is huge," Ekey said. "They are helping us out of the kindness of their own hearts to help us on and off the court. So, we can get better jobs and do what we want to with our lives in the future."

The Bob and Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803.
