NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State men's basketball head coach Dan Muller announced Tuesday that assistant coach Dana Ford has been named associate head coach for the Redbirds.

"When I hired Dana, we discussed the opportunity for him to be named the associate head coach," Muller stated. "After working closely with Dana all summer, I thought that this was the right thing to do for the program. Since Dana has been here, he's showed me that he's got everything it takes to be our associate head coach and then some. This is not to say that Torrey Ward is not deserving of this title as well, but in the end I believe this is best for Illinois State."

Ford was hired on May 21, after he previously served as an assistant coach at Wichita State, Tennessee State and Chipola Junior College. As a 2006 graduate of Illinois State and four-year letterwinner for the Redbirds from 2002-06, Ford has passion for the program and felt privileged to be given the new title.

"I'm honored and appreciate the support from Dan in making this decision," Ford said. "This is an opportunity that I do not take lightly, because I have a lot of pride and passion for this university and basketball program. I have 100 percent confidence in Dan and the direction he has this program going in and I look forward to helping him get it where we want it to go."

At Wichita State last season, Ford aided Gregg Marshall in guiding an NCAA Tournament team to a final Associated Press ranking of No. 18. The Shockers were 27-6 overall and claimed the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship. Prior to that, Ford coached two seasons (2009-11) at Tennessee State under head coach John Cooper and was instrumental in recruiting talented classes for the Tigers, which played key roles in the team's 20-13 record last season, including the upset of previously unbeaten Murray State on Feb. 9.

After just a short time working with Ford, Muller is confident in his abilities to serve in his new role and help the program move forward.

"What I want in an associate head coach is someone who can take over the program if I am not available, and I'm very confident in Dana's ability to do that," Muller stated. "The whole staff has had a great summer and elevating him to associate head coach is a tribute to him and the work done by our staff. Dana shares the same passion and love for this program that I do and he will be a big part in our success going forward."
