NORMAL, Ill. -
With a major in communications, Illinois State men's basketball senior Emmanuel Holloway could pursue a career in sports broadcasting, like Redbird legend Doug Collins. But the former Redbird great would have been pleased with how Holloway stepped in for injured teammate Dom Johnson late last season and kept the Redbirds on track with a 6-2 mark during Johnson's eight-game absence from the starting lineup. This type of leadership made Holloway a solid choice to receive the 2008 Doug Collins Endowed Scholarship at Illinois State.
Proceeds from the Doug Collins Roast and Toast in 1990 started the ball rolling for the funding of the scholarship. It is named for the former Redbird All-American who played at Illinois State from 1969-73, starred in the 1972 Olympic Games and has had successful careers in professional basketball as a player, coach and broadcaster.
Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovich recognizes Holloway's impact on last season's team.
"Emmanuel did a tremendous job for us last year," said Jankovich. "He had a number of big games for us and really elevated his game down the stretch. He is a valuable member of our team, as he's an outstanding leader and competitor."

After transferring from Iowa Western Community College, Holloway appeared in all 35 games, with 10 starting assignments, for the Redbirds last season. He was a member of the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference All-Bench Team and averaged 5.4 points, 1.4 assists and 1.7 rebounds per game.
Holloway was instrumental in the O'Reilly's/ESPNU BracketBuster victory over Wright State Feb. 24, 2008. He finished with a career-best 16 points, on 6-for-9 shooting, and pulled down a career-best five boards, while playing a career-high 34 minutes.
"This is a great honor, and anytime you are associated with Doug Collins, in any way, it's humbling," said Holloway. "The only goal I'm focused on accomplishing this year is playing in the NCAA Tournament. I would be lying if I didn't say I had personal goals, but getting to the NCAA Tournament is my No. 1 priority."
The Doug Collins Endowed Scholarship is one of 19 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that is funded by private donors. It is also one of eight fully endowed scholarships in athletics.
