NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior forward John Jones is the 2013-14 recipient of the Doug Collins Endowed Scholarship, as announced by ISU men's basketball head coach Dan Muller Thursday. The endowment honors Collins, the most decorated player in ISU men's basketball history.
"I am thankful for the scholarship," Jones said. "I had the privilege of meeting Doug Collins in Philadelphia at the Drexel game last year, and it is an honor to receive this scholarship in his name. I am going to make the most of this year, and I am looking forward to beginning the season."
While Jones has practiced with the Redbirds as a member of the team for the last two years, the upcoming 2013-14 campaign marks the first in which he will be eligible to play. The St. Michael, Barbados, native was forced to sit out of competition based on an eligibility ruling by the NCAA. However, he has already excelled in the classroom at Illinois State, earning AFNI Honor Roll accolades in two out of his first four semesters.
After attending Garrison Secondary School in Barbados, Jones also played a season at The Howe School in Howe, Ind., prior to ISU. He averaged 12.5 points and 11 rebounds per game while helping Howe post a 16-6 record and earn its first sectional win since 1960.
"John is a great kid, he cares about his education, and he can't wait to get on the court this year," Muller said. "Doug Collins represents everything we want our program to stand for, and I know JJ will do what he can to make Doug proud this year. We greatly appreciate Coach Collins' support."
Proceeds from a "Roast and Toast" event in 1990 began the funding of the fully-endowed scholarship named in honor of Collins. A Redbird All-American who played at Illinois State from 1969-73, Collins starred in the 1972 Olympic Games and has had successful careers in the NBA as a player, coach and broadcaster. On Feb. 3, 2007, the hardwood playing surface within Redbird Arena was renamed "Doug Collins Court." Collins' jersey number (20) was also retired in 1973.
The Doug Collins Endowed Scholarship is one of 24 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors. For more information about establishing an endowed scholarship, please call the Weisbecker Scholarship Fund office at (309) 438-3803 or click here.
