NORMAL, Ill. - There is something about hearing the name Doug Collins on the Illinois State campus, and Jackie Carmichael experienced that personally when he learned about being chosen as the 2011 recipient of the Doug Collins Endowed Scholarship.

"This is a great honor," Carmichael said. "Doug Collins is the greatest basketball player to come out of Illinois State and he is someone who each of us on the team looks up to as a role model. We practice on his court everyday with his jersey hanging up in the rafters, and he is someone I'm aspiring to be like. He is the gold standard of who a basketball player should be at Illinois State."

Carmichael is the Redbirds' top-returning scorer, after posting 9.8 points per game last season. He played in 30 games as a sophomore with 24 starting assignments. Carmichael collected three double-doubles on the season and scored in double-figures 14 times, including a 24-point, 17-rebound effort at Bradley, both career highs.

"There have been countless great players and outstanding coaches throughout the history of basketball, but Doug's complete basketball resume would have to place him among the top-10, or so, of all time," Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovich said. "Doug has had a remarkable, lasting career in basketball."

Proceeds from a "Roast and Toast" event in 1990 began the funding of the fully-endowed scholarship named in honor of the current Philadelphia 76ers head coach. Collins, a Redbird All-American who played at Illinois State from 1969-73, starred in the 1972 Olympic Games and has had successful careers in the NBA as a player, coach and broadcaster. On Feb. 3, 2007, the hardwood playing surface within Redbird Arena was renamed "Doug Collins Court" after the only player to have his jersey number retired in ISU men's basketball history.
