Redbird Men's Basketball Adds VCU Home-And-Home Series

June 12, 2013

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State head men's basketball coach Dan Muller has announced the beginning of another home-and-home series against a nationally-prominent program, as the Redbirds will open the 2013-14 season at Virginia Commonwealth, Friday, Nov. 8, at Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center in Richmond, Va. A start time has not yet been decided.

"I am very excited about starting this series with VCU," Muller said. "They are well-coached, play extremely hard and have had a lot of success recently. Playing at VCU gives us a chance to play in a hostile environment this year, which is a goal for me in scheduling. (VCU head coach) Shaka Smart's teams are always going to compete and be prepared, and bringing them back the following year should be very exciting for our fan base."

After traveling to VCU, Illinois State will host the Rams on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena during the 2014-15 season. The VCU series is the third home-and-home matchup set to begin this year, with the Redbirds also traveling to Northwestern Nov. 17 and hosting DePaul Dec. 22.

The Rams, who were ranked No. 23 in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 earlier this year, where their season ended in a loss to Michigan. With a win against Akron to start the tournament, VCU became one of just eight schools in the country with an NCAA Tournament win in each of the past three seasons. The Rams made it all the way to the Final Four in 2011.

VCU finished 27-9 overall and 12-4 (second place) in the Atlantic 10 during the 2012-13 campaign. The Rams also amassed a 15-2 home record, with a streak of 35-consecutive sellout crowds still intact.

The last time the Redbirds faced VCU, Muller was a sophomore on the court. In fact, he led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds to help ISU in a narrow, 74-72, loss at VCU, Dec. 23, 1995. Muller was also in uniform during VCU's only trip to Redbird Arena. As a freshman, he netted 15 points with nine rebounds to lift Illinois State to its lone win against the Rams, 77-68, Dec. 18, 1994.

VCU leads the all-time series against the Redbirds, 3-1, with the first matchup between the two teams occurring Nov. 28, 1990.

A date for Illinois State's home game against VCU in 2014-15 has not been set.
